LILAC PARK BEEHIVE AND OTHER
STONE STRUCTURES

The Historical Society continues to monitor the relocation plans for the stone picnic structures in Lilac Park and the future of the St. Louis Park Roadside Park.

The City Parks and Rec Department, headed by Rick Birno, has drafted a proposal that spells out the work needed and the cost.  They will be presenting it to the City Council very shortly.  If the City Council approves, the plan will be put into action, and major fundraising must begin.

The Proposal contains these elements:

  1. All fixtures/artifacts repaired and preserved at SLP Roadside Park.
  2. Beehive BBQ and last table be moved from Lilac Park to SLPRP.
  3. Restoration and a long term maintenance plan for SLPRP.
  4. Access to SLPRP from the Southwest bike trail.
  5. The new pedestrian bridge over Highway 7 be accessible from SLPRP.
  6. Any bike trail plan to link the Southwest and Cedar trails includes SLPRP.

The highway parks were not the only city parks in St. Louis Park with stone structures.  Mn/Dot has provided the Historical Society with pictures taken near Highway 100 and Wooddale.  These pictures were taken in 1939 (when the park was most likely built), but we don't know when it was removed.  If anyone has any information about the Excelsior Blvd. park, please contact us at history@slphistory.org.
