3993 WOODDALE

This was the address of a gas station situated at the intersection of Excelsior Blvd., Wooddale (now Park Center Blvd.) and Highway 100. It was part of the Lilac Way property, sitting south of Lilac Way Café. Due to the complexity of the intersection, it is difficult to trace the history of the site.

From 1935 to 1938, William Mallory ran the Minneapolis Suburban Gas Booster Station. But in 1936, R.S. Bartle was awarded a permit to operate three pumps at Excelsior and Wooddale. The building was hooked up to Village water in 1941. There are two possibilities in 1942: Lilac Lanes Service Station, managed by Frank Finn, and/or Lilac Way Socony (Mobil) Station, operated by “Jack and Larry.”

From 1943 to 1947 it was Daly’s Mobil, although in 1947 it must have been Lindy’s Mobil, as Clifford J. Andreason of Lilac Way Service Station requested a transfer of license to operate 3 pumps formerly owned by Lindy’s Mobil Station. (Andreason was part owner of the Beltline Pay Dump.) Also in 1947, a pump was added and the station possibly rebuilt (for $4,000). From 1948-56 it was called Lilac Way Mobil Service; in 1954 it was run by Warren Ford. The station was removed in December 1956.
