ORELAND A. "ORLY" THORNSJO

Browndale resident Orly Thornsjo was many things:  Honeywell project manager, sailor, race car driver, and more.  Orly worked with Honeywell engineers to develop the inertial guidance and control systems for the Apollo command capsule and Lunar lander - nowadays called the avionics system. The gyroscopes they developed were so powerful and well-built, they were able to keep Apollo 13's command and LEM from flying apart when the oxygen tank exploded.
