SUBURBAN BAPTIST CHURCH

This church started out as Oak Hill Baptist Church, first located at 3639 Quebec (7600 Highway 7). The congregation, led by Rev. Samuel P. Bell, was formed in July 1950 with 70 families and formally dedicated on November 5, 1950.

On July 14, 1952, the group requested a permit to hold a series of religious meetings in a tent at Highway 7 and Division Street.

By 1954, the church was called Suburban Baptist and had 100 members. An article in the Dispatch called it “informal.” In 1960 a blurb in the Dispatch mentioned that Suburban Baptist had 50 members, and that its minister was Rev. Le Roy Cook. Its last mention at that address in the City directory was in 1963; by 1964 the building on Quebec was occupied by Knollwood Christian Church.

In 1965 through 1970, Suburban Baptist was located at 9500 Minnetonka Blvd. (That building had originally housed Cross of Christ Church, and would eventually be the home of the Calvary Worship Center.) In 1970, Suburban Baptist was described as a “conservative Baptist church.” After that, it seems to have disappeared or moved outside of St. Louis Park.
