Unlikely but true, the Prime Minister
of Greece once lived in St. Louis Park.
The son of Greek Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou, Andreas
was born on February 5, 1919 in Greece. He attended the
American College in Athens and studied law at the University
of Athens. A Trotskyite, he was briefly imprisoned, and when
freed he fled to the U.S., where he received a Ph.D. from
Harvard in 1943 and obtained American citizenship in 1944.
He served in the Navy and taught at Harvard in 1947.
He
taught at the U of M from 1951 (his son George was born in
St. Paul in 1952) until he went to Berkeley in 1955. When
his father became Prime Minister of Greece in 1963, he gave
up his U.S. citizenship and returned to Greece, winning
election to the Greek Parliament. His father’s government
fell in 1965, and Andreas was again jailed in 1967. He
taught in Stockholm and Toronto, and returned to Greece
again in 1974. He became Prime Minister in 1981 and resigned
in 1989. He became Prime Minister again in 1993 until 1996.
He died on June 22, 1996.
At one point in the early 1950’s, Andreas and his family
lived at 4123 Brunswick Ave. in St. Louis Park.
