MEADOWBROOK COUNTRY CLUB

A 1914 map shows that the area that would become Meadowbrook Country Club labeled as "St. Louis Park Suburbs."  In 1924, the Atlas/Union? Realty Co. owned 207 [209.19] acres of prime land, on the south edge of Excelsior Blvd. near the Hopkins line. The realty company converted it into a golf course, and leased it to the Minneapolis Park Board. J. Foulis was the original architect. Meadowbrook Country Club opened in 1926. The Park Board of the City of Minneapolis had contracted to purchase the property as a golf course, although the owners are identified as Merchants Bank Building Co. of St. Paul.

In December 1945, the business suffered financial setbacks, and its owners sold the property to the City of Minneapolis for $75,000 – a great deal less than market value. The City was motivated to buy the property when the owners threatened to cut up the property into building lots.

Ann Nelson, the wife of Police Chief Andy Nelson, sold refreshments to golfers from her house at 4082 Colorado, which backed onto the golf course's third tee. A picture of her at this endeavor can be found in the August 6, 1953 edition of the Dispatch. All that's left in that location now is a Coke machine, perhaps in Ann's honor.
