This is a road that has had many names:
Superior Blvd., Wayzata Blvd., Highway 12, and Highway 394.
The name Wayzata endures on the service road to the freeway,
and businesses dot that ribbon of road on the south side of
394. At one time, there was a part of St. Louis Park
that was on the north side of the highway, but the freeway
took care of that, and now the only section of St. Louis
Park north of the highway is the Shelard area, at the
westernmost part of the City. Golden Valley, however,
does have some patches of vacant land south of the highway.
The following is an attempt to document the buildings that
were and are along Wayzata Blvd. The list was compiled
using City databases and resources, and some pounding of the
pavement. The dates come from phone directories, newspaper articles and ads, and a number of other sources.
They are identified by the occupant that was perhaps the most prominent
in the past. A "G" indicates that the building is now
gone. The years indicated are based on
available sources and the buildings may have existed before
or after the years indicated.
The chronologies are by no means complete, and we invite you to contact us
with any corrections, additions, or other comments. You
may also want to check out Highway
12 for information about the road itself and a little
about some of the occupants of these buildings.
This information comes from a variety of sources: newspapers, books, yearbooks, phone directories, interviews, etc. Given the varied sources, we cannot guarantee that all of this information is correct, and welcome any additions and corrections.
