GAIL DORFMAN

Gail Dorfman was elected to serve as the District 3 Hennepin County Commissioner in a March 30, 1999 special election. She has been re-elected twice, in 2000 and 2002.


Prior to serving as Commissioner, Gail was the Mayor of St. Louis Park (1996-1999) and a St. Louis Park City Council member (1991-1995). During her seven and a half years on the City Council, she worked to develop the neighborhood organizational structure; to promote and participate in the creation of the City's strategic plan, "Vision St. Louis Park"; to establish the grass-roots planning process for the developing town center; to encourage beautification and pedestrian friendly development through landscaping, innovative streetscape, and promotion of the arts as an important aspect of civic revitalization.


As Commissioner, Gail has worked to end homelessness, promote the development of affordable and supportive housing, reform our mental health system, and advance public health through the Hennepin County smoking ban. She currently chairs the Community Health Committee and the Hennepin County Housing and Redevelopment Authority.

 

Commissioner Dorfman has long served on non-profit boards that work to build healthy families and healthy communities. She chairs the Minneapolis Youth Coordinating Board, and serves on the boards of Life’s Missing Link, People Incorporated, the Metro Area Agency on Aging, and the Neighborhood Revitalization Program of Minneapolis.


Commissioner Dorfman's prior government experience includes working for a Member of Congress in Washington, D.C., serving as Assistant Director of the Boston, Massachusetts Neighborhood Development Agency, and serving as Research Director to the Governor of Ohio.


Gail received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Ohio State University and a Masters in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Gail was a Fellow at the Mondale Policy Forum of the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. She also was a participant in the Twin West Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program. Commissioner Dorfman is a 17-year resident of St. Louis Park.
