ALABAMA AVE. – ELMWOOD

On the original plat of St. Louis Park Centre, Alabama Ave. was originally called Jackson Street.  This page concerns only the homes on Alabama that are in the Elmwood or Center neighborhood.  Like many of the streets in St. Louis Park, there has been some renumbering of houses through the years, such that the addresses given in the 1930 and Census and 1933 directory (the earliest sources of addresses) may not match the current house numbers.  This is what we have:

3600 Alabama:

  • In the 1933 directory this was the address given for August Heimke

  • Color-Ad Packaging, 1963-

  • Curwood Minnesota, built in 2005, went out of business in 2012

3612 Alabama:  1939 – Fritz and Helen Bradley

This tiny house was the home of Frank W. Bradley.  Pictured are grandson Francis Bradley, his sister Anna Marie “Dolly,” Frank W., and neighbor boy Ronald Conley, @ 1944.  Photo courtesy Gail Martinson.

Gail Martinson:  “Looking at building sitting to north of our house.  Our garage for trucks was across the street to my right.”

3675 Alabama:  Ralph Wagner (presumably of Freeland’s Store) is listed here in 1933.  In the 1940 Census his address is listed as 3671 and John and Belle Freeland are listed at 3675.  These addresses were probably changed to 3751 and 3761.

3700 Alabama:  Union Congregational Church

3716 Alabama:  The 1940 Census lists this as the address of Burke and Dorothy Harrington, a bank clerk and stenographer.  The house must have been renumbered or removed.

3750 Alabama:  The 1940 Census lists this as the home of Adolph Youngdahl and family.  The house must have been renumbered or removed.

3751 Alabama:  First Pavey’s, then Freeland’s Store, built in 1918.

3761 Alabama:  Also built in 1918.

3762 Alabama:  Built in 1952.

3764 Alabama:  Built in 1940.

3771 Alabama:  Marie Hartmann remembered that this was the home of Mr. Cox, the Village lamplighter.  He was later a railroad crossing watchman.  The current house at this address was built in 1991.

3774 Alabama:  In 1940 this was the address of Lydia Ostrander, her two daughters, and her granddaughter.  Not an address today.

3780 Alabama:  Florence Austin and Ralph A. Strathy are listed here in the 1933 directory. In 1940 it was the home of C.J. O’Connel. This is not an address today, but it may have been renumbered as 6000 Goodrich.  The present house there was built in 1951.

3816 Alabama:  Built in 1916.

3820 Alabama:  No such address today.  In 1930, the address given for Frank J. Hoy.

The home was built in 1911.

3864 Alabama:  Built in 1928.
